Daughter of a heretic king. Her brother’s lover. All of Egypt’s shame....
Ankesunamun is born a royal princess to an Egyptian king – an heretical king, bent on transforming the country to his singular vision and worship of the One God. The cost is high, but pharaoh is blind to the suffering and rivers of blood that come at his command, and deaf to the angry cries of his country.
Heresy and disorder reign as Ankesunamun grows up surrounded by plague, bitter rivalry, jealousy, and anarchy. The ancient world of an heretic princess is over-shadowed by danger – but also love and loyalty. Her brothers, Smenkhare and Tutankhamun, are brought to live with the royal family in a foundling city; and Ankesunamun finds herself irresistibly, inescapably drawn to her older brother, the man destined to be her sister’s husband. Married off to Tutankhamun instead, Ankesunamun finds that cannot forget her erstwhile lover, invoking her proud sister’s jealous and fatal wrath.
But there’s more at stake than a lover’s secret and a sister’s vengeance. As the country degrades into tumultuous rebellion, and death lurks so very closely stealing away those she loves most, Ankesunamun is brought to the throne alongside Tutankhamun – a child king who is determined on the path of battle-glory and over-turning his father’s destructive legacy, resurrecting an Egypt of old. But already somebody is plotting for the crown that rests so tenuously on the Boy King’s head…
In this story of incestuous love and riotous anarchy, there are secrets, betrayals, passion, destruction of cities, and death. Ancient Egypt and the world of Tutankhamun comes to life through The Heretic’s Daughter, weaving an engrossing, thought-provoking web of intrigue and obsession – all in the words of the one person who might just have survived the destruction of one of Egypt’s great dynasties.

I found this book an easy read and an interesting take on what might have been. Although some facts about the Pharaoh Ahkenaten and his wife Nefertiti have survived the attempt by subsequent rulers to wipe their names from history, much remains to speculation.Told from the point of view of Ankehesenamun, the third daughter of the sun god Pharoah, her memories begin with the royal family's voyage down the Nile in order to found a city for Aten, the sole God her father worshipped.
She experiences her father's fervor to move away from the old gods, and bring Egypt into purview of Aten with the help of his devoted and well lived First Wife and loyal, if not menacing, vizier Ay.
But Aten does not prove to be a benevolent God and despite her father's efforts, tragedy marks the Pharaoh's family to the point where only Anhesenamun, her three younger sisters, and her half brother Tutankhamun remain of her family.
Convinced that the city her father built is cursed, she and her boy Pharaoh travel the Nile back up to the former capital Thebes. There King Tutt takes up the mantle of a warrior king and, along with his trusted commander, Horemheb, battle Egypt's enemies who have been free to plunder the Egyptian borders during her father's reign.
But not all the enemies of Egypt are foreign, as the Vizier Ay plots to bring the uranus crown to his own brow. After Tutt's untimely death, she finds herself alone as she tries to protect what is left of her family and country.
Although historically accurate on the whole, the author bends some details and adds others in order to craft this story of love, life, and death in early Egypt.

The Heretic Daughter edition by Lanna Blyth Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Read the Kiya series if you want a good read into this time period. Much livelier, with the relevant historical characters having far more interesting POV's.
Well written, holds the reader's attention throughout. Interesting take on Tut's family story. Of course, more is known about his life and death, but the artistic licence is acceptable.
A good story. A little slow getting started and at times the description of things and places gets lengthy and not that I'm a great speller, but the 'English' spelling throws me until I get used to it. Over all I enjoyed the book and I'll look for other works of Lanna Blyth.
I really liked this book. I am a sucker for stories set in Egypt and historical fiction, and this one fit right in. Love the characters and the story, and more than once I lost track of time while reading. Hoping for another book by Lanna!
I LOVED this book! As a lover of all things Egypt, pyramids and ancient Gods I knew the subject and setting would interest me, but this story is so much more. The characters are alive (even though of course long dead) and I found myself immersed in their personal stories as much as the fascinating drama of their lives. Descriptions wonderfully poignant but just enough to enliven the story, not overly done at all. The alternative story of what might have been is just brilliant. I would read anything by this author!
I'm not going to go into great detail of the story. It was fiction, but I will tell you the emotioms it invoked in me.
I lived the story as it was happening. I felt all the emotions. Saddness, happiness, frustration, helplessness. Anger, love, empathy. I very highly recommend this book. It is a rollercoaster of emotion. It kept me turning the pages to see what happen next. I truly love the way she took what we are told as facts and wove them into the story, along with her own spin on things. You can actually see this happening in ancient times and very possible to be a true outcome of how her life ended up being. When I was finished with the book, I looked around and realised it was just everyday life at home, that no one else was feeling what I felt. No one else just went through the emotional turmoil I just experienced. Very thought provoking and left me with much to think over and ponder.
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the " heretic " Akhenaten, who was Ankesunamun's father, and her brother/husband Tutenkhamen. Nefertiti was her mother.
All the efforts of the Pharaohs in keeping their blood royal by marrying siblings to each other came to naught.
This is an incredible story of love, hate, betrayal, cruelty, familial loyalty, and disloyalty.
If this story wasn't 734 pages long, I would loved to have stayed up all night so I could finish it in one sitting! It was that wonderful a read!
Thank you, Lanna Blyth, for this most wonderful read! Christine Schulz
