COVER: The cover draws you in. It is sensual, mysterious, and gives you an idea of what’s to come.CHARACTERS: The characters in this story were profound and realistic. Kai, the protagonist, came across as the sexy loner. He was respectful and thank God he wasn’t a pushover (I despise pushover good guys!). In a couple of scenes he got into fights and took up for his woman (way to go, Kai!). Sienna, Kai’s love interest, was no shrinking violet. Although Kai comes to her rescue more than once in the book, she shows him that she can take care of herself. Astrid, the sidekick, adds flavor to all the scenes she’s in. I liked her character best of all.
CONFLICT: So, Kai finds out that there’s something other-worldly weird about him. He tries to stay away from the girl he loves in order to protect her. Of course that proves futile and even when others tell him to stay away, he ignores all the warnings. Because of this forbidden love, Kai has caused the wrath of a jealous god to be cast upon him and all his loved ones. Does he give up his love or does he fight for his right to party? I thought it took a little long to get to the conflict. A lot of time was spent with the James-and-Sienna fight that I thought it would be super significant in some way.
VILLAIN: To me, the villain makes the story. They have the all-rights pass to be as bad as they want to be. I find it interesting how each writer takes advantage of this opportunity to project evil genius into characters. I had high hopes for Quinn, the jealous god who doesn’t want any non-human to fall in love with a human. When he first entered the story, he grabbed me with his line, “Things could be easy for you Kai. You should refrain from being seduced by that which you are so eager to indulge in.” I was like, yes, there’s the bad guy! He sounded wickedly classy. But then we don’t hear from him until waaayyy later in the story! I would have liked to see more of him. He did kill for no reason, increasing his diabolical rating. The ultimate-battle fight scene should have had more Quinn showing off his villainy skills.
ENDING: There’s nothing worse than going through a story only to be let down at the end. That was not the case with this story. I did think Kai changed his mind too easily at the end. Given his character, it would have seemed more realistic if he struggled more with whether or not he wanted to continue putting the love of his life in constant danger. But overall, I really enjoyed the story! The journey was good and the climax appropriate. Can’t wait to read the second installment!
Tanjlisa’s Rating System: Pretending to clap, Pity clap, Medium clap, Enthusiastic applause, Standing ovation
I give A Tale of the Other Kind an Enthusiastic applause. I enjoyed it and will read the second installment!

A Tale of the Other Kind Volume Book 1 eBook Leandi Cameron Reviews
I liked this book, book did not love it. I think it was mainly due to Kai constantly leaving Sienna for her own good, which was all he seemed to do. That's kind of depressing. I'm sure in the next book they find out they are mates, but I wanted to hit him over the head with a stick. The story need some help in the punctuation department (mainly missing quotation marks). That said, I'll still probably read the next book because i have to find out what happens next. Also, the characters were different than you read about in other stories. I hope the next book will let Kai and Sieinna's relationship grow in a more positive direction. Also, I'm sure you will need to read this book before reading its sequel because there is a lot of information in this book that I'm betting will be very important in the next book.
My girlfriend loved the cover of this before she even knew what the story was about, but I found it interesting that it's told from the guy's pov. The cover makes it look like a romance, but it's not a straight romance novel. Instead it turned out to be an entertaining read that involved forbidden love, were-leopards, angry gods bent on destroying were/human romantic relationships, and, my favorite, slimy killer harpies that attack in large, swirling groups. There's some potty language that isn't appropriate for younger teens.
The premise is about a teen's coming of age as he struggles with the truth of who and what he is and what he's becoming while trying to navigate a doomed relationship. If I was a were-leopard who fell in love with a human only to find that will kill her, I think I'd leave her alone; but then again I'm not a sexy teenage fantasy character so what do I know? There's a good amount of backstory and interesting mythology here that supports a believable world for the characters, and the setting, the South Africa mountains, is unique for this genre.
The first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. It's absolutely stunning!! I think that I would even go as far as to say that it would make it onto my list of favourite covers. Look at him!! He looks so content!!! Who doesn't want a guy to look that way when they are with you. I know I sure do!!
A Tale of the Other Kind is a book that is rich in such beautiful scenery. Set in South Africa, Kai feels an affinity to the surrounding forests and the author does an amazing job in her descriptions, so that you can picture with ease exactly what she is describing.
Kai makes no secret of the fact that he is crazy about Sienna. But she is seeing someone else. However after an incident between Sienna and her boyfriend, her and Kai start spending time together and a romance between the two begins. However theirs will not be a smooth ride. Kai is about to learn that he is a shapeshifter. I really loved the amount of detail the author put into describing Kai's first change. You could really understand what he was feeling. And that aspect of the book was possibly what I liked best.
Kai had a real need to protect those he was close to. His feelings for Sienna were obviously strong, but there were times that I didn't feel the same feelings coming from Sienna. There is definitely a good dose of romance in the book but it just felt one sided to me sometimes.
There are quite a range of paranormal creatures that pop up at different times in this book. Astrid is one that stands. I think she had the most vocal personality in the whole book and for the most part I really liked her but I did have times where I wished she would tone it down just a touch.
All in all A Tale of the Other Kind was a quick, pleasing read. I'm hoping for a greater level of connection with Sienna in book two.
3.75/5 Stars!!
This book was gifted to me for an honest review.
